Raised in Belvedere, California, she grew up riding her horse in the hills of southern Marin County, which nurtured her deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural landscape. Her interest in nature fit her desire to paint in the plein air (outdoor) movement.
However, Deborah's style stretches beyond any one movement or style. Influences on her body of work are Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Edgar Payne and Fairfield Porter. When describing her admiration for these painters, she expresses they were able to capture the essence of a scene with the least amount of detail; yet still capture the mood of the moment.
